A university degree in Law obtained at any university in the State or abroad recognized as equivalent  is required in order to be able to train as a notary.

After the reform introduced under Law Decree n° 166 of 24 April 2006 (Official Gazette n° 107 of 10 May 2006),  the university graduate needs to register with the Board of Notaries and must work as trainee for 18 months with a professional notary. Under the law, a university student can work as trainee with a Notary Firm during the last six months before graduation (and after the degree he will have to work for the remaining twelve months without interruptions).

Officials of the judiciary and lawyers who have been practising for at least a year can train for a continuous period of 8 months.

The trainee must train for at least one year with a Notary Firm of the district indicated by the trainee with the consent of the Notary and with the approval of the Council.  Upon request by the trainee, the Council of Notaries designates the Notary where the training will take place. The training period must however be completed within 30 months from registration. If this time period expires without having completed the training, the trainee will lose the six months he had done before graduating from university.
