Italian Notarial Foundation and the Corriere della Sera Foundation: “The Law in an Age of Technology”

The development of modern technology poses questions about our ethical bases and criteria of legitimacy that seemed to have been resolved and presents our society with new uncertainties which urgently require answers: to what point is technology to be considered independent? Is it the law’s job to oversee its actions and establish its boundaries? And if the answer is affirmative, what are the limits of the law’s reach beyond which we must think in terms of the rule of ethics? We are witnessing an evolution of western society that requires us to reflect deeply upon a possible new balance among ethics, law and technology. This is not a simple task but one which has never been more necessary and is becoming ever more pressing.

The Italian Notarial Foundation in collaboration with the Corriere della Sera Foundation is sponsoring a cycle of three Conferences on the subject of “The Law in an Age of Technology” which are to be held in Milan in the Buzzati Hall at the Corriere della Sera Foundation (via Balzan 3) at 5 p.m., as follows:

  1. Moving Beyond the Law? The Future of the Law and Technology’s “Lust for Power” – Thursday 17 May
  2. Moving Beyond Justice? Natural Law and the Challenge of Pluralist Democracy – Thursday 14 June
  3. Moving Beyond Human Nature? From the Sacredness of Life to the Freedom to Decide About One’s Death – Thursday 18 October.

For further information about these events, please see the Foundation’s website www.fondazionenotariato.it.

These stories, from times past and present, emerge from the provisions of the last wills and testaments of famous men and women as well as of ordinary people. They make interesting and in some cases even comical reading. Those who choose to give a noble end to their existence through a charitable bequest turn their will into a story of love for their fellow man and send a message of hope to new generations.
