Mr André Michielsens, a Belgian notary, is the President of the Council of the Notariats of the European Union for 2014. He follows Mr Frank Molitor from the Luxembourg notariat. He will be assisted during his term in office by a Board composed of the following presidents of the notariats:

  • Mr Jean TARRADE (French notariat and incoming Vice-President of the CNUE)
  • Mr José Manuel GARCIA COLLANTES (Spanish notariat)
  • Mr Martin FOUKAL (Czech notariat)
  • Mr Dumitru Viorel MANESCU (Romanian notariat)
  • Mr Peter DANCZI (Slovakian notariat)
  • Ms Marjana TICAR BESTER (Slovenian notariat).

Mr André Michielsens has been a notary in Wijnegem since 1982. He was President of the Antwerp Chamber of Notaries from 1999 to 2001 and President of the National Chamber of Notaries of Belgium from 2002 to 2005. He has also been a lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel since 1994 and Co-director of the Master in Notarial Studies since 2007.

Important dates await the European notariat in 2014, a year of European elections. In this perspective, the Notaries of Europe are striving to propose a 2020 plan to European citizens and the European institutions, seeking a better future in cooperation with the notariat. Among the subjects that will occupy the European notariat in the coming months, the development of the EUFides platform will be the centre of attention, like the proposals for regulations on matrimonial property regimes and the property consequences of registered partnerships. Company law, an ever-evolving area at European level, and the fight against money laundering will also be given particular consideration.

These stories, from times past and present, emerge from the provisions of the last wills and testaments of famous men and women as well as of ordinary people. They make interesting and in some cases even comical reading. Those who choose to give a noble end to their existence through a charitable bequest turn their will into a story of love for their fellow man and send a message of hope to new generations.
